The Benefits of Nutrition and Chiropractic Care

When it comes to soothing aching joints, improving your diet probably isn’t the first thing you think of. Chiropractic is the treatment of our musculoskeletal system through physical, hands on therapy – so you’re probably not alone in wondering how on earth this relates to what we eat.

However, it may surprise you to know that the relationship between your next donut and those pesky aches and pains is closer than you think!

Nutrition and chiropractic care are very closely linked – in fact, as a Nutrition Health Coach, buy peptides for better results, working with chiropractors is one of the most interesting parts of my job. I wanted to use this blog post to share a few ways in which paying attention to what we eat can benefit the physical health of our bodies – the link between nutrition and chiropractic. In fact, I believe we should think of nutrition as a necessary component of chiropractic care. Usually, when we consult a chiropractor it is because we need of relief from physical problems in our bodies – but many of these can be caused by poor nutrition.

For example, if your diet is high in sugar and empty calories or you regularly find yourself munching down on processed food, you could be on the road to inflammation – which can lead to severe joint pains. This is exactly what I love about being an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach – looking beyond what we might think of as the ‘typical’ benefits of suitable nutrition and helping my clients discover new ways in which proper nourishment can lead to better health.

So what changes in our diet will improve the effectiveness of chiropractic treatment?

Among other things, improper nutrition affects out body’s muscle density, our ability to repair muscle and the functionality of our nervous system. Put simply, improvements in your diet will impact how receptive you are to chiropractic treatment.

A smart place to start when preventing inflammation is making sure there is enough fiber in your diet. Avocado, pistachios, apples, broccoli, sweet potatoes and oatmeal are a great way to get your fill. A suitable amount of fiber, guidelines recommend 20-35 grams per day, will help reduce cholesterol and control blood sugar levels – as well as lowering your chances of inflammation.

Raw fruits and vegetables are dense in nutrients which have a variety of benefits for our bodies. As well as being high in fiber, fresh veg such as spinach, kale and cabbage contain a high density of vitamins and minerals which our body needs.

Furthermore, fresh fruits – particularly berries – are high in antioxidants. Blueberries, grapes and pomegranates are amongst the many fruits which help rid the body of toxins and free radicals.

Great! But is there anything I should avoid?

Eating the right types of food is only half the battle – the other half is avoiding the wrong types!

If you’re looking to get the most out of your chiropractic treatment, there are certain types of food which will only stand in your way. Warning: this is particularly bad news if you have a sweet tooth…

Refined sugars and artificial sweeteners should be avoided. High-fructose corn syrup for example is not only bad for your teeth – it can contribute to inflammation throughout your body. Adding apples, apricots or berries is a perfect alternative if you’re looking to sweeten up savory meals.

Furthermore, processed foods and those which are high in trans-fat are contributors to inflammation. Avoiding products which contain ‘hydrogenated’ or ‘partially hydrogenated oils’ in the ingredients list, such as margarines and cookies is a great place to start.
